Purpose

Limitless Knowledge Association develops literacy and critical thinking among Internet users of all ages, but it serves primarily youth in primary and secondary education. Online text games such as Redwall MUCK spur creative roleplay, while Say It encourages our users to submit poetry and short stories.

Children and the Internet

We have many people under 18 involved with our site. Many times, the children know more about the Internet than their parents do. The FBI was nice enough to write up a document that explains to parents who may be unfamiliar with the Internet something about what to do with and for their children in regards to safety on the Internet.

To read the FBI's write up, click here. Kids, show your parents...even though you may not like some of it.

A couple of corrections and suggestions in regards to the FBI's notes:

  1. Instant Messages aren't associated with chat rooms...they are independent of them.
  2. Moderation of any chat service, whether its a chat room or one of our virtual reality sites, is always "after the fact." The improper message will be seen before any moderator can take action. So, there is always the risk of offensive or inappropriate material appearing briefly. Please do complain to whoever runs the system (us for this one!) if such happens, so that the people causing the problems can be removed. And we have sent logs of such things to the FBI when we had someone that crossed the line into improper behavior.
  3. Nothing done on the Internet should be secret--though it may be private. Children may not have a legal right to privacy from their parents, but they don't for instance expect their parents to watch them use the bathroom either. Nothing in a chat room should be hidden, but what goes on that may offend the parent may not necessarily be bad. Simplest example is "bathroom humor" which is very common among adolescents but which parents have simply outgrown. However, any sort of offers for explicit material is clearly a problem and should be dealt with.
  4. The FBI suggests never allowing face to face meetings with anyone from the net. This is overly paranoid. In the glory days of amateur radio people who knew each other only from the radio arranged meetings. However, the arrangements for meetings should always be done between the parents--never between the kids. Let the parents meet online, and exchange work phone numbers and talk voice.

In general, children shouldn't be roaming the net "unsupervised" anymore than they should be roaming the city unsupervised. The older the children (such as 16 year olds) the higher the expectation of proper behavior from them...on the net or off it. With the computer in the living room and no secrets kept, the Internet can and should be a worthwhile addition to your children's life.
